Sometimes, I feel my opinions alienate me from the art community.
hn.
Anyway.
There is a lot of noise going around about the "Orphaned works act" or whatever. I'm keeping my feet out of
that bucket till something a little more solid than speculation and old news comes out of it. Looking into it, and will make some voice if I feel it's called for.
So. There is so much noise about Big Business descending upon and devouring the huddled masses of artists. Not so sure about that. Not there there is no need for worry. I am pretty against the concept of big business, but it strikes me as so strange where people chose to draw lines.
All the pitchforks and torches over '

rotecting their art and characters' makes me wonder how people justify fanart/fanfiction. (In the context of non cannon plots/situations/relationships/etc. Not just homage/tribute works)Not on the side of 'fair use' or whatever but on the side of using the creation of someone else to their own ends. Maybe its one of those stick it to the man things. The copyright owning company whoever, won't care/notice/do anything, so it's okay. All those characters are the brain child of someone, though. They aren't spit out by mindless computers. But anyone with a 'face' in the community (not some corporate name) who does the same thing, gets burned to the ground. Interesting.
And. So many people are so very '

rotect my stuff' and thats all well and good. But. How many people download music with out buying the album? How many people download movies? And the one that has interested me for a while, how many people on this site OWN the software they use?
Just more breath.

It's all old news anyway. I've been recommending to people that if they are that worried about it, if they're voting-age and registered, they need to just go tap into their government reps and say something. That's *all* they can do. Period. Pitchforks and torches won't help - bringing media attention to it WILL force the issue, and most likely WILL bring about the passing of it. So... keep it low-key, because so far that's how it's needing to be played...
We can't have it all. We can either have the protections of full copyright until 70 years after we're dead (thank you disney et al) OR we can have "free information on the net". Can't have both - think about it. You said it yourself: how many people here download free things, or pirate them, and yet have the gall to yammer about this?
I own my software and I buy my music thanks

I think I'm abstaining even from journaling on stuff like this. But I do not alienate you. I thrust bastard kittens at you like I had no part in making them.
And to completely deviate from the topic [am I the only one who finds it strange to use that word/its bretheren correctly, despite being on the site?], I am SO getting a Sphynx cat. I'm looking into breeders right now.
As I said, if I feel the need is justified I'll write my senators/congress-persons.

And unfortunately it IS next to impossible to fight it. And it ends up being so much tail chasing. But, for most amature artists taking on big business for infringement is probably just as far reached (though more financially than other wise.)
rather scary in the end, those internets.
If some big business comes along and appropriates a picture I drew, I'll be properly affronted BUT this is the vicious Real World. I also work my ASS off for a company that doesn't know I exists, get paid a dismal wage that doesn't even bring my annual income up to the poverty line and doesn't give their employees paid vacation.
I'm getting SCREWED by my job, as are my numerous co-workers. I take the shit for the small amount of good that comes from the job. And I'm not alone- ask anyone who works in the service industry. No one gets paid enough to really live on (survive yes, flourish no) and the work is hard because you're dealing with other human beings on a constant basis.
I'd rather be one of those folks who diffuses landmines someday. It'd be less stressful. If you've served in any capacity, then you know what I mean.
The point is: I applied for that job and I'm still working there. Y'all make art and chose to put it online for public consumption. Art theft and 'orphaned work acts' are part of that choice.
And I'm not saying this is how it OUGHT to be, I'm saying that this is how it is. It's up to every individual how to choose under the circumstances as they are.
I chose to share my artwork with whoever is interested. I choose to remain employed with this company. I take the good with the bad; you thrive on the good and you find a way to fight the bad.
That was longer than expected...!
Mad props for doing (the dismal) what must be done.
And I agree, for most of us it boils down to (as with practically anything) what are you willing to do about it? Keep safe, and never share and grow, or accept the possibility of a risk.
